Know where to be
Your welcome email confirms our Madrid hotel and Day 1 timings. Aim to be in the hotel lobby/reception area for the first group meet-up listed in your welcome email.
First group meeting
Please be in the hotel lobby/reception area at the meeting time listed in your welcome email, ready for our Welcome Dinner and first evening together.
Before then is simply arrival and settle-in time — check in, freshen up and ease into Madrid at your own pace.
Hotel check-in
Hotel check-in is normally after 3:00 PM.
If you arrive earlier, reception can usually store luggage while you explore nearby cafés or simply relax after your flight.
Airport transfers
Trafalgar offers complimentary arrival transfers at set times. Please check your joining documents carefully for details.
If you are arriving independently, Madrid airport taxis are safe, straightforward and easy to use.
First impressions of Madrid
Madrid tends to feel energetic from the beginning — wide boulevards, late dinners, busy plazas and people outdoors well into the evening.
Don’t worry about trying to “do everything” on arrival day. Spain reveals itself gradually throughout the tour.
The rhythm of Spain
Spain often runs a little later than many visitors expect — especially in the south. Once you settle into the rhythm, it becomes part of the fun.
Afternoons are warm
Especially in Andalusia, midday temperatures can feel quite intense. Water, shade and slower pacing help more than trying to power through.
Evenings start later
Dinner often begins later than many guests are used to, particularly in Seville and Granada where plazas and restaurants stay lively well into the night.
Spain is best experienced slowly
Some of the best moments happen between the landmarks — wandering old streets, sitting in a square or stopping for tapas between sightseeing.
Expect atmosphere everywhere
Music, conversation and outdoor social life are a huge part of everyday life here — especially across southern Spain.
On the coach
The coach becomes our moving base between destinations — comfortable, social and surprisingly relaxing once we settle into the journey.
- Seat rotation happens daily — I’ll explain the system clearly on Day 1.
- Bring a small day bag with what you may want during the day.
- Keep water with you, especially on warmer sightseeing days.
- Air conditioning is standard on the coach, though outdoor temperatures can still feel very warm.
- Snacks are absolutely fine — just avoid anything likely to melt or spill.
- We plan regular comfort stops throughout the journey.
What to pack
Spain is generally easier to pack for than people expect — lighter layers, comfortable shoes and sun protection go a long way.
Essentials
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A light jacket or extra layer for evenings
- Sunglasses and sun protection
- Reusable water bottle
- European plug adapter
- Small day bag
Packing smarter
- Leave some room for shopping and local finds.
- Lightweight breathable clothing works best.
- Good walking shoes matter far more than formal outfits.
- Evenings are often more relaxed than people expect.
What to expect from the weather
Most departures experience warm to very warm conditions, especially across southern Spain.
Southern Spain can feel hot
Seville, Córdoba and Granada can become extremely warm during the day, particularly in summer months.
Evenings are often beautiful
One of the best parts of Spain is the evening atmosphere — outdoor dining, warm light and plazas slowly filling with people.

Questions before the tour?
Before the tour begins I may occasionally be travelling or finishing another tour, but I will always get back to you as soon as I can.

Final note
Once the tour begins, most people settle into the rhythm surprisingly quickly. Enjoy the journey as it comes — and if you are ever unsure about anything, just ask.
See you soon in Madrid.
